At GCSE we follow the OCR Syllabus which consists of 4 Areas of Study covering a wide range of music from different genres and traditions. These are:-

Spotlight on My Instrument — pupils develop an understanding of the range and repertoire of their chosen instrument through independent research and instrumental practise.

Ensembles — pupils learn about different types of musical ensembles and how to perform and compose music for them.

Dance Music — pupils study a range of different dance styles from different historical periods and musical traditions.

Descriptive Music — pupils learn about different types of descriptive music, for example Film Music and develop their own compositions.

Music is a practical subject and we strongly believe that pupils learn best through having the opportunity to take part in practical music making. All lessons have a practical element.

Within Music we also offer a BTEC qualification at KS4.

At BTEC we follow the EDEXCEL Syllabus which consists of 4 main units. These are:-

Planning and creating a Music product — pupils work in teams to plan the creation of a musical production.

Professional Development in the Music Industry – we explore the career opportunities and development possible within the music industry and investigate possible career paths and training Post 16.

Exploring Musical Composition — pupils develop a portfolio of compositions in different styles and genres using a variety of music software.

Planning and Creating a Music Product — The whole group works together to promote, participate in, produce and record a music event.

Students are welcome to attend after school for homework support and also assistance with instrumental practice. In addition, the music department runs a coursework support session after school on Fridays to support students with completion of this work. Students are expected to support the extra-curricular program by participating in at least one music club every week.
