At Key Stage 3 the Design Technology department comprises 3 workshops and three dedicated subject rooms catering for, Textiles, Food, and Catering. All staff in the department work together, shares ideas, expertise and experience. All teaching staff in the department is expected to teach across the age range of the school. The department is well equipped with a wide range of materials, tools and machinery including CAD, CAM.

The study of making food includes:

• a broad range of practical skills, techniques, equipment and standard recipes, and how to use them to develop, plan and cook meals and single or multiple products
• how to plan and carry out a broad range of practical cooking tasks safely and hygienically
• healthy eating models relating to a balanced diet, the nutritional needs of different groups in society and the factors affecting food choice and how to take these into account when planning, preparing and cooking meals and products
• the characteristics of a broad range of ingredients, including their nutritional, functional and sensory properties

The study of making in Textiles include:

• Development of practical skills using machines and hand stitching.
• Working in a safe environment.
• Taking into consideration material properties to guide material choices.
• Developing design skills to aid creativity
• Learning about CAD/CAM applications.
• Using technology to produce textile based products of a high standard.

Graphics opens up pupil’s minds to the world of the visual media. From street art and graffiti to music album artwork and corporate identity, students will learn to employ graphic techniques that catch the eye and inflame people’s imagination.
