Key Stage 3: Year 7 and 8

At Kingsford we group students according to their performance in Key Stage 2 Mathematics. The most able students follow a program of study guaranteed to challenge and enrich them.

WHAT WILL YOUR CHILD STUDY…?

The program of studies in Year 7 has been structured around the National Curriculum and is guaranteed to develop each student’s ability of using and applying mathematics through thinking skills and investigative work. There are four key areas:

  • Number and algebra
  • Geometry and measures
  • Statistics
  • Using and applying Mathematics

A breakdown of these topics will be listed in student’s progress tracker. Homework will be set twice a week, and each piece should take between 30 minutes and 1 hour to complete; extension work for higher attaining students will also be given.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

In Year 7, parents can support their child’s learning by: -

  • ensuring all homework set is completed to the best of their child’s ability
  • Working with their child to ensure identified targets are met.
  • Also, all pupils have access to www.mymaths.co.uk. This can be used as an additional Mathematics resource and, on occasion, will have homework set on this site.

Key Stage 4: Year 9, 10 and 11

In key stage 4 your child will begin a three year GCSE course. Students are placed into groups based on their performance at Key Stage 3. There are six different ability groups on both bands sets 1 to 6. Set 1 to set 4 follow a higher tier course whilst set 5 and 6 follow a foundation tier course.

We offer both Edexcel linear and modular GCSE course. Only set 3 and 4 follow modular course.  All the other students follow the linear course.

The modular course is broken down into modules which may be sat in November, March and June. Each module has its own weightings ranging from 20% to 50%.

Homework is set at least twice a week, each piece should take between 45 minutes and 1 hour to complete. We also expect each student to work independently by consolidating the learning objectives of each lesson.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

In key stage 4, we provide all pupils with GCSE revision material, including past papers. Please ensure your child is fully utilising these resources at home. It may be useful if, where possible, parents would also provide a suitable test environment while pupils are attempting past papers.

All pupils have access to www.mymaths.co.uk. This should be used as an additional Mathematics resource for independent study to help consolidate at the end of each lesson. Your child will also have homework set on this site.
